Claydon Amenities
We are a small community and a number of facilities including local shop, post office and pubs have disappeared in recent years. The nearest convenience store, pubs, post office and doctor's surgery are all located in the nearby village of Cropredy (2 miles).
- Playing Field - our largest and most widely used resource. This land was by the village and is currently under the custodianship of the Parish Council. The main field is approximately 0.5 hectares. A dedicated and secure play area for children up to the age of 12 has been created and recently benefited from the addition of multiplay equipment. The Playing Field hosts the village's main outdoor events, including the annual Firework Night (see Claydon Diary).
- Allotments - Several allotments next to the Playing Field may be rented and are managed by the Parish Council. Check with the Parish Clerk (Sue Upton - 01295 758398) for current availability. An allotment application form can be downloaded here.
- Church - St James the Great. Built in around 1100 the church is used for services every week, led by our resident vicar Rvd Pat Freeth. The nearby Church Room is available for hire and is well used by village groups (see Claydon Groups). For details about church services or any other information about the church please email here.
- Bygones Museum - A large collection of yesteryear farming machinery and other objects from village life in previous ages. A tea room and restaurant provide welcome refreshments.
- Oxford Canal - Passing just outside the village to the south-east, the canal arrived in the 1780s linking the Midlands with London. Claydon Locks mark the descent of the canal towards Banbury and the towpath is popular with ramblers, dogwalkers and cyclists alike. Access from the Appletree Road adjacent to Claydon Middle Lock.
- Clattercote Reservoir - This 3,000 sq metre lake surrounded by a wooden boardwalk is a haven for natural habitat. Access from the Mollington Road.
